My husband and I recently moved into a gorgeous, though much older, apartment. The kitchen at the new place is a bit smaller than the one at old place, but the new digs are brighter and have a lot more personality. With the exception of the small stove – which is gas, at least – I thought that I’d love cooking in this new kitchen.
Wrong. Ever since I got it setup, I’ve avoided that room like the plague. I wanted to cook, even felt inspired to cook, but would I cook? No. Something about my new kitchen was off-putting and stressful. I feel overwhelmed when I walked in the door and turn right around and plunk my butt at my computer instead, which usually results in hours lost on the internet. I’ve only lived here a month! How could I already be tired of this room? I picked the pale yellow color of the walls and cabinets because they make me happy, but it wasn’t helping in this situation.

I had to think a while about what the problem was. A few apartments ago (yay, the life of a renter) I had a feng shui specialist come in to look at our place. The first thing she did was stop in the kitchen. “This area is uncomfortable,” she pointed out. “It’s not the layout, though. It’s that corner.”
She pointed to an area of the kitchen where I tend to stick stuff without thinking. We all have a place like that – the default dumping ground for stuff that doesn’t belong anywhere else. “Does that corner feel good to you? No, I’ll bet it doesn’t. We need to clean that up. Oh, and put a small red rug in the spot where you stand the most.”

At the following apartment, I brought in a friend who works as an organizational consultant. That kitchen constantly had me feeling overwhelmed, despite the fact that it was new and roomy. She pointed out that my cabinets were terribly cluttered, and offered solutions for making things look and feel neater. Once I followed her advice, I felt much better moving about the room and working with my cooking tools.

Now, here I am again. A new kitchen that makes me uncomfortable. Instead of dragging everyone back over to my house – though I suppose I could bribe them with goodies, were I actually able to prepare anything – I decided to recycle the past advice I’d received.

First, I looked for the inevitable dumping place that I usually create without realizing it. I cleared out the clutter of cutting boards and cookie sheets, moved my monstrous KitchenAid Pro mixer to another corner, and stuffed my food processor in the closet. I also put all of my cookie sheets in the closet, slid in between a shelf where they’re out of the way and not causing problems.

That was a good start, but the room still felt stifling. I took out my Cuisinart rotisserie brick oven that we almost never use, which takes up a HUGE amount of space considering how little we use it, and ditched the butcher block of knives for a magnetic wall strip. I installed some shelves on a black wall space, which now houses salt, pepper, cat treats, and a nice green plant.

Now, the kitchen feels much more open and inviting. I can actually breathe in there and I don’t feeling a dark cloud of impending doom whenever I step into the room. Going a step further, I organized the dishes in the cupboards with some handy accessories from The Container Store, but I still need to work a bit on organizing the food cabinet a bit. I’ll save that for later in the week.
Today, I’m going to bake something.
PS: I was so excited that I put together this little slideshow video – it’s only like 7 seconds long:

Your kitchen looks down right luxurious! I know what you mean though, about that corner that you cram full of all the stuff you can’t figure out what to do with. We have so little space in our kitchen that most of our appliances are in the adjacent room and brought out only when needed. Still, with so little counter space, clutter seems to be a constant bother.
Really? Thanks! It’s so much smaller than our old kitchen, though I guess these photos do make it look pretty big.
It’s probably 7×7, including counter space, fridge, etc. Thankfully it’s bright! Our last kitchen was black, which made it tough to photograph and also made it feel really small.
OMG, you do not know how badly I needed to hear that today, well for the last month, maybe 2. I too have been in a funk about my kitchen, and have been in sheer avoidance of the whole place! Now it must be time to tackle the cluttery corner!
Let me know how it goes! Maybe we should start a kitchen-clutter challenge?
Oh, the dreaded cluttered corner. Our kitchen is big and bright, but it’s also the room we spend the most time in, which leads to newspapers and mail and magazines and old water glasses and heels of bread in paper bags, which leads to Nowhere To Put Anything Argh! Someday I swear I’m going to start picking up after myself.
Oh my gosh, just reading that stressed me out.
Sorry!
Oh, help!! Somebody stop me before I pile more stuff. Two violet plants, an electric tea maker, a blender, a food processor, a rice cooker, and the end of the shelf lined up cookbooks (a whole shelf inside the small pantry has cookbooks, too.) Oh yeah, and the boxes of tea and the copper plate piled with notepads, pens and etc., and the basket for powerbars and fruit. That’s on ONE side of the kitchen. On the wall: mugs on a wooden-peg hanger and plates and paintings.
I need someone to come in and force me to empty cabinet shelves so some of that can go “indoors.”
Oh dear, I totally know where you’re at. Yikes. It stresses me out just thinking about it!
Maybe I will can a kitchen reorg challenge. Sounds like fun, and support is always good!
Doesn’t being organized feel great? Not to mention that empty counter space. I covet empty counters. Also, the red teapot, covet that too.
Who is playing on the slide show? Nice sound.
It really does. Not only is it easier to work, but I feel like accomplished something. I feel so much lighter.
Here’s the song info:

OMG, I just knew you had to live in California. Only someone from CA would ‘feng shui’ their kitchen, LOL. Everyone else would just organize it (I lived in CA for years, so used to the ‘California thing’.
But, do love your kitchen. It’s very cute and sooooo California looking. Gorgeous photos too!
lol. I guess it is sort of California, eh?
I so know what you mean! I’m still trying to get our kitchen organized in a way that is efficient and visually appealing. It’s really the room I care most about, I haven’t even gotten to unpacking the rest of the house yet.
Oh! I hope you post pictures once it’s put together! I’d love to see what it looks like.
As a fellow serial mover, this post really spoke to me. I don’t feel settled in until I find a place for everything (or not — declutter indeed!) and everything in its place.
Enjoy your easy-to-navigate new space. I hope you find yourself cooking many meals in this lovely looking kitchen
I totally freak out if there’s clutter, whereas my husband thrives on clutter (a trait he gets from his mom). My mom also lives amongst a lot of crap. I refuse to live like that! It leaves me panicky and completely unhappy…
Okay, except for the silly music in the video, this post is awesome and inspiring and your kitchen is gorgeous and SO CLEAN AND NEAT. Wow. I am totally impressed.
What what what did you decide to bake?!
xo
(p.s. Am posting this to FB right now to share with my cyber friends)
Haha! The music was kind of silly, wasn’t it? I decided to bake pizza rolls, which I’ll post on the blog soon. They were SO GOOD, probably because the kitchen felt so good to cook in!
Love, love, love your new kitchen!! Such an inspiring post. Makes me want to immediately do the same to mine.
Actually, that might be a good post for your blog – decluttering the B&B kitchen. You probably use yours more than most people!
Looking good, Steph! We are in the midst of planning a kitchen renovation of a 1930s bungalow. The corners of the “work triangle” are in three different corners of the room with a dining table in between, so I’ve been spending a lot of time thinking about how to make the kitchen work. We just brought home an induction cooktop for the soon to be island last night. I gotta echo everyone else though, that red kettle is adorable!
Thanks! I can’t wait to see what yours looks like when you’re done. And I do love that red kettle.
I so badly needed to read this post. A feng shui consultant is such a great idea; so many times something feels *wrong* but it’s hard to put your finger on what exactly the problem is. You’ve got me thinking now..
Your kitchen looks inviting and beautiful; may you enjoy many happy times cooking in it!
Thanks! I found a consultant to be so helpful. Often it’s like a therapist – a completely unbiased opinion to say, “this works, that doesn’t.”
I’m about to move into a smaller kitchen too and I’m wondering how I’ll make it as appealing as the one I have now. I think packing away anything you don’t really use is key. I must admit one reason I’ve never bought a kitchen aid mixer is that they’re so big.
That was a big one for me – moving the rarely used stuff into the closet or garage. I set up shelves to house all of my kitchen wares. Maybe I’ll do a second post and show how I’ve got it all setup.
your kitchen looks lovely, Steph. glad you have it to a place you will enjoy cooking in.
my actual cooking space in my kitchen is quite welcoming and works well, but, over by the door there’s all that music stacked up …that’s what I need to work on. you’ve got me thinking now. thanks.
We all seem to have that corner – at least yours is more interesting than mine, with stacks of music.
Isn’t it amazing how we feel when our space becomes cluttered? I know it makes me less productive. You’ve inspired me to de-clutter my kitchen, office, bedroom closet and more, just as soon as I return from NYC and Montana.
That’s awesome! It makes me feel good to know I might help others feel more comfy in their kitchens.
Stephanie, your kitchen looks fabulous! That natural light and those gleaming appliances! I love my current kitchen, but it’s challenging because it’s a studio and the cabinets are tiny (the one drawer isn’t large enough to fit my silverware caddy).
I’m moving in with my boyfriend next month and our new kitchen is absolutely gorgeous!!! Stainless steel, chef-grade appliances, frosted glass cabinets, a small pantry. I want to keep it nice, though, and that means not cluttering it up with too much stuff.
Nice jorb, Steph
I really enjoyed this post. We have a small kitchen and getting more organized has helped me love it more. (So have the new countertops and appliances!) But, you know, I like the idea of bringing in a feng shui pro to evaluate the energetic space. Just a terrific idea.
I wouldn’t call myself a neat person, but I always feel better when i have everything organized. I recently cleaned the clutter out of my kitchen cabinets and reorganized everything. I feel so much better!
Love your kitchen – it looks bright and happy and… organized!
Hi, I just found your site when I was looking up decluttering kitchen appliances. Liked your post, but I did a double take…this kitchen, the tile, the position of the window, the cabinets, the stove… looks so much like a kitchen I had in a small 1 bedroom apt I rented in LA… I loved that apartment and have been very nostalgic for it recently! (I moved to Oregon last year) Don’t know if you live in LA but I was so curious I had to ask…
