Hey everyone, just wanted to let you know that my most recent NPR article is live. This one’s very near and dear to my heart, so I thought I would share:

A Gluten Free Thanksgiving includes three recipes: stuffing, butternut squash (or pumpkin) pie and a lovely cornbread recipe that originated with Shauna James Ahern from Gluten Free Girl and her good friend Martha Woodard. Please stop in, check it out and leave a comment on the article if you like it!

I am not allergic to gluten, but this pie looks GOOD. Can I make it with a regular pie crust from the store? Will it be differently.?

It should work just fine with a regular pie crust. :)

I love your NPR article. Great description of the first Thanksgiving. Felt like you were sitting at my table. This will be my third TG and the first one I’m getting to stay home and cook. I’m so excited I don’t have to make my food to go this year. Food has been a big part of my life and career but now it’s much more rewarding. I love blogging and sharing with others. Right now I’m part of the Gluten Free Thanksgiving Progressive Dinner Party. Shauna Ahern and I will be serving tomorrow’s side dishes. I hope you’ll check out everyone’s dishes. By the time Friday is over there will be a gluten free menu fit for a gluten free queen.

Thanks, Diane! How did the progressive dinner party go? Sounds like a ton of fun – will definitely check it out!

Love your site, BTW. :)

A gluten free, egg, soy, nut, corn and dairy free thanksgiving can still be amazingly delicious and traditional. Sorgham flour makes a gravy that I prefer to the familiar stuff. If you brine the turkey, you can’t stuff it anyway, so an outside the turkey stuffing made w/wild rice and sweet potato is a better than acceptable alternative. Apple crisp made with a crust consisting of date sugar, ground oatmeal, sorgham flour, brn rice flour and almond meal if you can eat almonds is marvelous!

Of course, here it is:
Peel and slice about 6 Cortland or Macoun [NOT Macintosh] apples and put into a baking dish. Pour over it about 1/8c pear nectar or apple cider, or water to keep it simple.
In a separate bowl, mix together, but let sugar & butter remain a bit lumpy
3/4 c date sugar
1/4 c butter [or ghee] = 1 stick
1/4 c of organic gluten free oatmeal [grind up a bit in a blender first]
1/4 c sweet sorgham flour
1/8 c brown rice flour
1/8 c almond meal
Bake @ about 350 for 1/2 an hour, or until it looks done & apples are soft.
You can also add dried cherries, currents, bananas, anything, it’s a versatile dessert!
Lovely served w/Yogurt, if you can eat dairy.

I realized the request was for gravy, sorry, here’s the gravy recipe:
mash together 1T sorgham flour & 1T olive oil, or butter, if you are eating dairy.
put into a saucepan on med heat, have a cup of broth ready, chicken or veg. As soon as it begins to sizzle begin whisking in the liquid very very slowly until it is all assimilated and there are no lumps. turn heat down a bit, add blk pepper, crushed garlic, a bit of ginger, Celtic sea salt, finely chopped FRESH herbs of your choice. I prefer sage, rosemary and tarragon. I you want the sauce to be a cream sauce, a bit of almond & rice mild gives you that effect.

Thank you sooo much for this recipe. We have a customer that cannot have Gluten and we’ve really wanted to find a treat that we could make for her that was gluten free and sounded good. Maybe I just haven’t looked closely enough, but this is the first recipe that has actually appealed to me.
